Celebrate 50 Years of American Pie

Your likeness in the Goldmine Magazine AmPie50 drawing!

To mark five decades of American Pie, I’m launching a new drawing project representing the many characters and groups in one of the most epic songs in the Classic Rock era. And you can be a part.

ILLUSTRATING THE SONG

Each lyric line of American Pie is filled with imagery from dancing barefoot, marching with the unyielding band, or the joking jester hijinks. It plays like a movie in your head as you listen. The decade that passed between the day the music died and Don McLean put it down is ripe with people and events.

The drawing will take shape over the Summer of 2021, sponsored as always by fans who have great memories of growing up in the ‘70s when the radio never stopped bringing new sounds. As you study the lyrics, line-by-line, you will discover where each character and each scene is shown. You pick the place you want to be, and claim your spot.

50 Years of American Pie - Placement Key

Once you orient to the general location of each lyric section, it’s easier to navigate the Placement Key. Certain placements and characters are more commanding and in demand. So the pricing varies accordingly. A-List spots are the highest, but you can get in the drawing for as little as $25.

PICK YOUR PLACEMENT

It’s an interactive process. First you reserve the placement you want. That’s first-come, first-served. There are four levels: General, Featured, Star, and a new one this time out, A-LIST.

GENERAL placement is one of multiple figures, such as
dancers, Levee patrons, marching band players and other personnel.

FEATURED locations are those of which are characters specially mentioned in the song.

STAR locations are more prominent, such as the slow dancers, paperboy, or the drum major.

A-LIST is reserved for the most pronounced placements and characters:
The King and Queen, etc.

WHAT YOU GET:
GENERAL placement comes with your image in the art featured in the Goldmine Magazine double-page ad. The ad will run in the December issue this year, marking the release date of the album.

FEATURE locations get a $10 certificate toward purchase of merchandise such as posters and T-shirts along with with your image in the art featured in the Goldmine Magazine double-page ad.

STAR locations get a $25 certificate toward purchase of merchandise such as posters and T-shirts along with with your image in the art featured in the Goldmine Magazine double-page ad.

A-LISTER locations get a $50 certificate toward purchase of merchandise such as posters and T-shirts along with with your image in the art featured in the Goldmine Magazine double-page ad.

GETTING YOUR LIKENESS: Most images come from social media connections. Other options like email are possible, but are slower and offer less flexibility. I need some leeway in making the selection since matching a facial expression to a location or face angle comes into play.

PERMISSION: It’s granted you give your permission for your image to appear in print and on merchandise. No one’s name will be published in the magazine. It is likely a key to the drawing may include your name - how else would you find where you are?

THE ART IN PRINT WITH DON McLEAN INTERVIEW

I have commissioned an exclusive interview article with Don McLean which will run in the December 2021 issue of GOLDMINE MAGAZINE. This 2-3 thousand word story will include insights and commentary by the artist regarding inspirations and references in his work. A two-page spread of the final art will appear in the same issue.

The issue is expected to hit the streets in October. Driven by the release schedule, final art must be submitted in August, so the deadline to be drawn into the design is Tuesday, August 31, 2021. Order now to make sure you are part of this amazing project!
